Analog mastering in the Pacific Northwest since 2011

BreakPoint Mastering is an analog mastering studio in Portland, Oregon, run by Adam Straney. He has over 15 years of experience mastering records on high-end analog and digital gear. Hundreds of releases with labels such as Sub Pop, Hardly Art, Holodeck, Hush Hush Records, Kill Rock Stars, Neon Sigh, Glass Cane, Shelflife, Freakout and HomeSkillet, along with a massive list of independent releases.

Most of the work here is indie rock, hip-hop and electronic, a lot of it from Seattle and Portland and surrounding areas where I live, plus artists from all over the world looking for that hands-on sonic touch I lean into. Not only the loud releases but I have also worked on a great deal of ambient and headphone focused material, including a big chunk of the Hush Hush catalog, plus IDM, house, downtempo, trip-hop, dub and dream pop. Post-punk, lo-fi, psych, noise, shoegaze, garage rock and folk records come through here all the time. I've worked with artists including Shabazz Palaces, THEESatisfaction, Tacocat, Knife Knights, Porter Ray, Yuno and the Moondoggies, along with synthwave style records for Holodeck and Afropop with Pierre Kwenders and others.

I love working on records that push boundaries and speak from the soul of the artists. Call them left-field, weird, eccentric, or whatever you want. I love artists who break rules and do their own thing.

Some records want to be loud and big, and I'll push them there. Others, like ambient and some jazz, I'll balance if needed and let breathe. I do love adding some polish from my rig, though. Everything here goes through real gear with me sitting in front of it. No presets, no AI, just blood, sweat and tears to make your record sound amazing (truly, I once cut my finger on the edge of some rack gear and bled all over my desk...).

I master for streaming, vinyl, cassette, CD and pretty much anything else you're putting out. I've mastered over a hundred vinyl releases and countless cassettes. I don't cut lacquers myself, but I get your masters ready for the cutting engineer, split into sides with a cue sheet and everything they need. If the cutter is local, I can sit in the session with them. I know some great cutters here in Portland. There's more info on vinyl, cassette and mix prep in the FAQ.

I can also film bits of your session if you want, free (it's fun for me too). The clips are yours to keep or post. I'll only post them myself if you're cool with it. There's a bunch in the highlights on my Instagram if you want to see what that looks like.
